Healing the Seeds of Comparison
By Jason McGrice
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” The apostle Paul wrote that he had learned to be content in all situations while in prison. The common wisdom being shared is to be grateful for whatever it is you have – whether it be regarding finances and other material resources, the relationships in your life, or your own talents and abilities.
In WIT, we can find ourselves wishing we were better at the thing we’ve created a program for and comparing ourselves to others more proficient in it. This is an often under-recognized side of shadow. We’re used to talking about the negative things we see in others that are reflections of ourselves, but rarely do we remember that, when we truly admire another person, it also points to some unintegrated part of ourselves we need to claim.
