Habits of Success podcast episode: How to Let Your Actions Dictate Your Feelings
So often when we get stuck, we let our feelings dictate our outcomes. This 10 minute podcast will guide you through letting your actions dictate your feelings. Here are some of our notes below:
  • Can’t be controlled or swayed by feelings
  • Becoming successful at something is hard work and brings up many challenges along the way
    • This can lead to discouragement and a loss of “feeling like it”
    • Easy to quit at this point
  • When your feelings run your life:
    • “I don’t feel like doing that”
    • “I don’t feel like getting up”
    • You don’t do anything if you’re not motivated in the moment
    • Can’t control your feelings, but you can control your actions
  • The challenge is to get started on the task despite not feeling like it
    • Your feelings will change
  • Make a final choice to stop letting your feelings dictate your behavior
  • When we decide to stick to our plan despite our feelings, we actually feel more accomplished, confident, and encouraged
  • We are always either losing or gaining confidence in any area in our lives
    • Never neutral
    • When we skip out on our plans, we lose confidence in those habits
    • When we stick to our plans, we gain confidence
  • Three things to overcome feelings
    • Have a daily Must Do List (not To Do) - things that have to get done that day
    • Purposely do uncomfortable things on a regular basis (e.g., taking a cold shower when you love hot showers) - builds confidence in doing uncomfortable things
    • Think long-term - what do you want in the future? - Focusing on the endpoint builds motivation
